Thanks to the generous donations of Mansfield families, Roland Green Preschool students were able to create over 40 birthday bags for children in need. During the month of November, Roland Green collected donations of items such as cake mix, candles, and frosting to create Birthdays in a Bag which will be donated to West Side Benevolent Society for distribution to families in need. This was a wonderful activity to introduce the idea of giving back to our youngest learners.

Roland Green Preschool Birthday in a Bag Service Project Roland Green Preschool Director Kris Delaplain is excited to announce that the preschool will collaborate with West Side Benevolent Circle to give back to the community by creating ‘Birthday in a Bag’ kits. Birthday in a Bag is a way to provide a birthday party for children who might not have one otherwise. Many families are not able to provide food for their families, let alone a birthday celebration. “This service project is a great way to teach our students at a young age to look past themselves and to think about donating their time and energy to help others who might be in need. Let’s teach our children, the future generation, that it is our duty and privilege to help in our community” said Delaplain. During the month of November, students and staff will collect items to fill the birthday bags and students will decorate, sort, and fill the bags. The bags will then be donated to West Side Benevolent Circle for distribution to families in need. West Side Benevolent Circle is a local all-volunteer organization providing assistance for families in Mansfield since 1890. While West Side’s work is more widely known during the holiday season, they are embedded in our community and work year round assisting families in need. Their mission and purpose is to provide charitable assistance and support to residents who lack financial resources due to illness, losing a loved one, or other challenging life circumstances. Birthday Bags will be filled with boxed cake mix, frosting, disposable cake pans, candles, party favors, disposable plates, napkins, cutlery, decorations and a birthday card. Superintendent Murphy stated that she is proud to see our youngest students embarking on this project. “All children should be able to celebrate their special day, no matter their family’s financial situation. I’m so proud of our preschool students for helping to ensure that all children have a happy birthday.” When asked about this project, West Side President Dawn Saba stated, “West Side would love to thank Roland Green Preschool for this great idea of engaging our youngest students and showing them how they can start learning how to give back to the community and bring a smile to another child’s face on their special day. We are proud to be able to partner with them and provide this special item to our families in the community.” Roland Green Preschool is accepting donations through November 30th. If you would like to donate, please email kristina.delaplain@mansfieldschools.com or call the preschool at 508-261-1561.

EL Family Night On November 6, Mansfield Public Schools, in partnership with the Mansfield Public Library, hosted an English Learner (EL) Family Night at the public library. MPS EL Teachers Sofia Constantino, Sue England, Elsbeth Finucane-Albert, Mark Krikorkian, and Nicole Lynch talked to families about programs and resources offered in the schools, including translation and interpretation services. This was also an opportunity for families to meet their children’s EL teachers. Representatives from the library offered a tour of the facility and helped attendees apply for a library card. The district has been holding this event for several years, and this is the 2nd year we have partnered with the Mansfield Public Library. The night was attended by over 25 families from Haiti, India, Pakistan, Syria, China, Algeria, Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, Egypt, El Salvador, and more. “Events like this reinforce the district's vision and mission of building relationships and connections between families and educators and the Mansfield community,” stated Michael Connolly, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. Thank you to Ms. Constantino, Ms. England, Ms. Finucane-Albert, Mr. Krikorian, Ms. Lynch, and QMS Assistant Principal Jim Schliefke for their support and attendance at this community event.

Roland Green Preschool celebrated AAC Awareness Month by encouraging students and staff to wear their words and showcase the power of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Our goal is to promote awareness of the multiple ways individuals can communicate using AAC and to inspire discussions about communication diversity. When we wear our words, we are illustrating that everyone has the right to a voice and there are numerous imaginative ways to communicate. We encourage you to take part in making today both enjoyable and significant by getting involved and inspiring others to do so as well. Let's proudly showcase our words and raise awareness for AAC together!
